How much water do you really need every day?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1143\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/couple-drinking-water.jpg\" alt=\"How much water do you really need? \" width=\"269\" height=\"403\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Should I Drink a Lot of Water?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your body is about 60 percent water. We need water to maintain our bodily functions, including digestion, absorption, circulation, the creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and maintenance of body temperature.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_edn1\">[i]<\/a> \u201cFluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health,\u201d says Kaiser Permanente nephrologist Dr. Steven Guest.<\/p>\n<p>Lack of water can lead to dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tiredness<\/li>\n<li>Lack of energy<\/li>\n<li>Dry mouth<\/li>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<li>Dry skin<\/li>\n<li>Constipation<\/li>\n<li>Increased thirst<\/li>\n<li>Decreased urine output<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Much Water Should I Drink Every Day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/fnic\/DRI\/\/DRI_Water\/73-185.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Institute of Medicine<\/span><\/a> recommends the following total daily water intake:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men: 13 cups of water (104 fluid ounces)<\/li>\n<li>Women: 9 cups of water (72 fluid ounces)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When Should I Drink More Water?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are times when you really need to drink more than the recommended amount of water. These times are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Before, during and after exercise<\/li>\n<li>When it\u2019s hot outside<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re pregnant or breastfeeding<\/li>\n<li>When you\u2019re sick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What If I Can\u2019t Drink That Much Water Every Day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure you can! It can be difficult at first to drink so much water every day if you\u2019re not used to doing so, but here are some tips to help keep you hydrated.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"list-style1\">\n<li>Don\u2019t leave home without it! A large variety of water bottles is currently on the market, so it\u2019s easy to find one that matches your personal style. Look for bottles that are stainless steel because they don\u2019t have any of the chemicals that many plastic bottles tend to have.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t wait until you are thirsty to drink water! By the time you start to feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Your brain can also mistake thirst for hunger. If you feel yourself starting to get the munchies, drink a few glasses of water and then see whether you are still hungry.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s an app for that! Where would we be without our smartphones? These days, there\u2019s an app for everything, including apps that send a reminder to your phone when it\u2019s time to drink some water.
